Meet A Rebel Zandra Rhodes

The Queen of Colours

The colourful British textile designer Zandra Rhodes made her entrance to the fashion industry in 1967. With her vibrant and playful prints, she revolutionized the scene for good. Being true to herself and standing by her designs, Zandra Rhodes is a true rebel and the Queen of Colour.

In the 80’s Zandra was a frequent visitor of Studio 54. It was a fabulous, glitzy time where Donna Summer was all the rage and Zandra would be pictured leaving the club in the early hours with Bianca Jagger.

“I adore that my prints have become wall murals. A rebellious and unexpected statement that doesn't hide in the background – quite literally!“

“A rebel is someone who comes up with a totally new concept - something that sends shockwaves.“

Ayers Rock – How Australia Inspired Ayers Rock

The Ayers Rock pattern, now rightfully called its native name Uluru, was created by Zandra Rhodes during her first visit to the centre of Australia in 1973. She was traveling for a large publicity campaign for her textile designs for Selkers Silks and Australian Women’s Weekly.

She drew this amazing rock with the spiky spinifex grass in the foreground. The pattern was first used for gorgeous square cloaks in wool felt and classic one sided chiffon dresses that have become immortalised by Jackie Kennedy and Lauren Bacall.

Zebra Skin – Multicultural Motives Behind Zebra Skin

This Zebra Skin design was created during Zandra’s African show, which made its debut at Olympia in 1981 with amazing makeup by the great Richard Sharah.

The design was part of Zandra Rhodes’ African Collection in 1981. The Zebra Skins are mixed with Chinese motifs with exotic stripes and the skins are surrounded with Zandra's interpretation of African explosions.

Manhattan – Glitz and Glam Manhattan

The pattern for Manhattan is a magical zigzag print, celebrating the electric city of New York. The print was first featured in the 1984 Magic Carpet Collection on chiffon dresses with gorgeous pointed hems and hand-finished glittering beads.

In the 80’s Zandra was a frequent visitor of Studio 54. It was a fabulous, glitzy time where Donna Summer was all the rage and Zandra would be pictured leaving the club in the early hours with Bianca Jagger. At that time, Zandra was staying with her friend Divine in his penthouse on 85th Street and would go out early in the morning and draw the skyscrapers. What a monumental time for arts, fashion and subcultures! Full of colourful explosions and glitter, Zandra portrayed The Empire State and Chrysler Buildings as a giant, sparkling icicles.

Fringed Follies – Exotic fringing that always stays in place

Zandra loved the idea of exotic fringing that would always stay in place because it’s printed! These resemble beautiful exotic curtains that will make a perfect backdrop for everyday living!
